Intellibed is one of the manufacturers who wanted to bring more to the online mattress industry than just improved foam and unique combinations of the same materials. To this end, they created a special gel-like material that is layered as a grid inside the surface and provides support, cooling, and comfort.

Currently, the Intellibed offer includes three different mattresses, but they all feature the gel material and an inner-coil structure. So, to make sure we understand the product the right way, we decided to review the Sapphire surface, which is considered the medium firm design in the offer.

You Should Purchase Intellibed Mattress If

• You like testing new materials – Intellibed may not be a new brand, but if you’ve never tried one of their beds before, you should consider trying it now. The new Gel Grid material is impressive and quite comfortable for most sleepers.
• You don’t like sleeping hot – The gel is also extremely effective in keeping the sleeper cool and dry while in slumber, and the grid-like structure is great for ventilation.
• You need extremely good back support – The layer of gel combined with the springs action creates a fantastic surface for people who need their back to be supported and spine well-aligned.
• You’re not a fan of memory foam – Sapphire doesn’t have any memory foam in its construction, but it is just as soft and contouring where you need it to be. Still, the surface is a lot more responsive than viscoelastic foam.
• You like the pushback action of springs – The base layer, that is a series of high-quality steel coils that act individually, is fantastic when it comes to motion isolation and buoyancy.
• You need to see the product before buying – Intellibed is one of those products that can be found both online and in stores all across the country.

You Should Not Purchase Intellibed If

• You’re looking for a low-cost mattress – Sapphire is quite on the high end of the budget spectrum, but it does come with plenty of cool features and provides amazing variable support right where you need it.
• You want memory foam – None of the Intellibed platforms contains viscoelastic material, but the Gel Grid material is soft and supportive while also providing contouring.
• You’re looking for the standard bed-in-a-box design – While it can be bought online, the product doesn’t follow the standard bed-in-a-box concept.

Construction Materials of Bed

The Numea Sapphire comes with a unique inner-structure that features even weight distribution and full back support. The layers are organized as follows:

• Top Layer – It is made of Serene™ Comfort Quilt, which is soft and plush to touch, and a silica fire blocker that stops the materials inside from catching on fire if such an unfortunate situation happens.
• The Gel Matrix Layer – This layer is unique and only available in Intellibed designs as it was specially designed for these surfaces. This layer is in charge of variable support, pressure point relief, lumbar support, and perfect weight distribution. Not to mention, it is a material that doesn’t trap heat, so it will sleep cool.
• Talalay Latex – Also known as natural latex, the layer provides anti-microbial characteristics and keeps the bed bouncy and firm.
• Support Layer – The last layer is made of individually wrapped coils and provides a stable and solid base for the ones on top. It’s also responsible for good spine alignment and motion isolation.

We loved the top cover side, which is white in color and breathable, because it’s extremely soft, but also because it comes with a very elegant pattern. However, you want to be careful with it as the surface is not removable. Of course, you can spot clean it, but you must make sure to avoid any water getting into the layers inside. The manufacturer recommends steam cleaning as the best method with this surface.

Reviewing the Firmness

According to the manufacturer, Intellibed is the only no-compromise mattress in the industry that is both 100% firm and 100% soft at the same time. Still, they all feel differently when it comes to firmness levels.

With the promise of truly deep and restorative sleep, Azure comes as a firm surface with good bouncing movement and plenty of support and weight distribution.

The build is similar to the Sapphire, and the only difference is that the latex layer is replaced by a layer of high-density foam that doesn’t create a body impression. Otherwise, the top layer (or the cover in this case) is also quilted, and the layer of gel and layer of coils are the same.

Considering the level of firmness and numerous online reviews from actual owners, we learned that Azure is best suited for stomach sleepers and back sleepers who like a bit more firmness.

Considered the most comfortable mattress ever, Indigo comes with a second layer of Gel Matrix and two bottom layers of Talalay latex. This makes the surface softer than bot Azure and Sapphire, providing plenty of sinkage for those who need it.

The design works best for side sleepers who need a softer surface to keep their limbs from getting numbed during the night and their spine well-aligned.

Sapphire is the product we reviewed, and we can say for sure that this is the medium version from Intellibed. Not too soft and not too firm, this bed works for anyone who is not set on a certain position as it will accommodate all of them.

The cool thing is that the firmness will stay pretty much the same even for heavyset people, due to the Gel Matrix layer, which has some interesting and unique features.

Our Opinion on the Sleep Temperature

As we reviewed the Sapphire from Intellibed, we had no problem with overheating regardless of the temperature outside.

Now, while most manufacturers will solve the overheating problem using gel infusions in the layer of foam or chemically opening the foam’s cell structure, Intellibed solved it without the involvement of any harmful chemicals.

Their proprietary gel, which is layered like a grid, is quite amazing in keeping you cool and wicking any humidity away. This is due to the revolutionary shape that allows air to move, but also the composition, which doesn’t trap heat.

Edge Support

Because Intellibed is supported by a layer of pocketed coils, edge support is pretty good (especially when compared with all-foam mattresses). Still, you will notice some compression when you sit on the edge, but this is normal if the inner-structure doesn’t offer any reinforcement.
